Sunday, Oct 29 Corinto, Nicaragua

Gary and I are not really history buffs or even good at remembering important dates in the past.  However, today we are going to make an effort..  Momotombo Volcano is the location near the first city of Nicaragua, Leon.  From the bus we can see the volcano which marks the start of our amazing race day.

first stop is “old Leon “ est. 1500’s by the Spaniards because gold was found here  (Don’t ask me why people wanted gold please) and this location is accessible to Lake Xolotlan for water.  Because of frequent volcanoe eruptions, earthquakes and over mined gold etc later on the capital moved to a different location.

There’s not much left of the ruins to photograph except for a few statues of a man and his best friend.

There’s a really cool fruit tree called Gicaro which produces big round balls that taste like sour pears planted all over the site.  The leaves of the Gicaro is shaped like a cross.  Our guide tells us her parents used to hit her with this leaf when she was naughty and told her she was being punished by the great one.  Oh dear.

Just before lunch break, we climbed up to an amazing view point of the volcanos and the lake.

Lunch was simple but delicious, grilled meats, rice, beans, banana chips, coleslaw and Nicaraguan beer.  Even fido know where lunch is served.

Back on the bus after lunch, we head to the new Colonial Leon some 45 mins away.  The way of life is pretty simple here as animals roam freely along the streets and kids play with what ever is available to them.

We arrive at our last amazing race final destination.  The pit stop is an hour to see the main square and church. Gary and I were so excited to find a fruit stand that had peeled and sliced Gicaro for sale then tried it.

We made it back to the ship just before she pulled out of port with our Nicaraguan souvenirs.  Adios amigos.
