Saturday, Oct 28 Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala
By the time I woke up, Ms Eurodam was backing in to Puerto Quetzal , the first Central America port. Looks like we Got lucky and missed tropical storm Selma during the night and was able to dock in Quatemala this morning. Our excursion today is to Antiqua, an UNESCO world heritage site 90 minutes drive through Guatemala’s lowlands with view of volcanoes, cattle farms and sugar cane plantations.
There’s no way we could do this on our own as roads are very narrow and traffic jambs are frequent.
After we got off the bus, Gary and I high horsed it to the local market to get fresh fruits. OMG the fruits are fresh, sweet and huge! The market was in full swing as it was already 11 am. Remember siesta time is just 3 hours from now. You have to really hustle to get anything.
Had some fresh papaya
Of course markets are really good for other items as well ......like bake goodies! Ya like I need more.
Also lots of street vendor serving Pupusas and deep fried banana, Gina stuck to the bakery goods
Or just stuff in general.
Lunch time came way too quick. My prince always manages to find the best cuisine in town for us. NOT!
The local buses are parked just outside the market stalls ready to transfer people back home. Theses buses are old school buses originally from America and the Guatemalans chose to paint and decorate the outside to cover up the old logos. They are also refered to as “chicken”buses because of the amount of people and ehm animals they transport.
At any given time I try to look for native plant species to admire where ever possible. The soil here is rich and the amount of rain it gets produces beautifully tropical varieties.
My love on the other hand wanted to take photos of fountains. go figure?
It started to rain a little as our motor coach headed back to the dock. These Mayan descents speaks 200 different dialects in Guatemala and most of them are farmers. Sprinkled along the road sides, there’s always fruit and vegetables available if you didn’t get to the marcado in time.
